Daily News is the first tabloid newspaper ever published in the United States. It was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and was a subsidiary of the Tribune Company.
The paper attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence; lurid photographs; cartoons; and other entertainment features. Its circulation reached 2.4 million copies in 1947. Today, it is the ninth-most widely circulated paper in the country.
Several years later, the paper moved from 220 East 42nd Street to its current headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street. The building was designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood and is a landmark in New York City.
It is now owned by tronc, the publishing operations of the former Tribune Company, and has a circulating print volume of around 200,000. During its heyday, the Daily News was one of the most prominent newspapers in the world.
The Daily News is also home to a television station, WPIX, and a radio station, WFAN-FM. The News is also a leading newspaper in New York, and maintains bureaus throughout the city.
In its heyday, the Daily News boasted of its strong local news coverage and sensational headlines. It ranked as the nation’s best-selling newspaper in many years and remained one of the top newspapers in the United States, even with its declining circulation.
However, its editorial stance has been more moderate in recent years. It is often viewed as a moderate alternative to the more conservative New York Post, and has recently been described as “flexibly centrist” by The New York Times.
Despite its skewed bias, the Daily News remains an important part of the New York City news landscape. It is the largest paper in the city and its coverage of local politics continues to be very robust.
As of 2017, it is owned by tronc, the publishing operations from the former Tribune Company. Its current circulation is approximately 150,000 copies per day.
It has an overall AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left, which indicates a very liberal bias. Its reliability score is Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting.
The Daily News is a major source of local news in New York, covering all of the five boroughs of the city. It also serves as a major source of national news, with its editorials and feature articles often highlighting breaking stories from the surrounding region.
